Jennifer’s Journey: How the Total Gym Power Tower Helped Her Fight to Walk Again

By September 11, 2025October 2nd, 2025No Comments

On 24th September 2013, 16-year-old Jennifer Smyth was a competitive gymnast practicing vault during training when tragedy struck. A freak accident left her with a broken neck, leading to immediate paralysis from the chest down. Diagnosed as an incomplete C5/6 quadriplegic, she was told by doctors she would never walk again.

But Jennifer wasn’t ready to give up.

Having trained as a gymnast for 12 years, she was no stranger to injuries. She approached her accident with the mindset:

“It’s the same as any other injury—it will just take longer to recover.”

Over the next decade, Jennifer dedicated her life to recovery and independence. She adapted to her new life as a wheelchair user, but never let go of her ultimate goal: to walk again.

She went on to achieve incredible things—earning a degree in product design, travelling to America for intensive physiotherapy programs, and ultimately opening Jenn’s Gym, a registered charity in Northern Ireland dedicated to people with neurological conditions.

How the Total Gym Power Tower Has Helped

The Total Gym Power Tower has been central to Jennifer’s training. With its unique bodyweight-resistance design, it allows her to:

✔️ Perform assisted leg presses to strengthen lower limbs
✔️ Safely scale resistance for progressive rehab
✔️ Build upper body strength with pulls and presses
✔️ Reignite her passion for fitness in a controlled way

Jennifer explains that unlike traditional gym equipment, the Power Tower adapts to her needs—helping her train both for daily independence and her long-term dream of walking again.

The Birth of Jenn’s Gym

Through her journey, Jennifer realised how few gyms were equipped for people with spinal cord injuries and neurological conditions. That’s why she launched Jenn’s Gym—a fully wheelchair-accessible facility offering adapted equipment and specialist programs.

Her mission is clear: to give others in her position the opportunity to stay fit, healthy, and hopeful.

“Exercise plays a crucial role for everyone—abled or less abled. At Jenn’s Gym, no one is left out.”
